"It has increased my self-esteem and social skills, and I know better ways to react to certain situations with people.”

sharing best practice for the benefit of young people ...
The Project is an successful evidence-based early intervention model of peer support for young people with mental health issues. In response to interest and demand, The Project's model has been manualised, and is now being made available to allow it to be replicated in other areas, so more young people can access support *.
With the value of early intervention being increasing recognised as the most effective way to prevent mental health issues from escalating, our model has been evaluated of a number of years to show its effectiveness with young people. With many young people falling below thresholds for statutory care, providing early intervention services is vital to preventing escalation of symptoms, and potentially longer-term mental health risks.
Set up in 2013, it opened its first group in Axminster, Devon, and has since gone on to open a network of groups for young people across East Devon, South Somerset and West Dorset, as well as winning awards and being recognised as an example of best practice at national level.
The Project model focuses on:
a non-clinical approach to mental health issues
reducing isolation by bringing together young people with similar experiences
a safe space to talk, share, give and receive support
a programme of creative and social activities designed to develop self esteem, build confidence and improve mental wellbeing and resilience
The Project model has now been documented, and collated into a 'peer support in a box' package, which can be purchased to enable the set up of early intervention initiatives in other areas. Replication of The Project has been successfully piloted by others, saving time, money and resources, and enabling more young people to be supported through a well-respected, successful and extensively evaluated model.

* Please note, we do not offer direct support through The Project Training & Consultancy, but rather are working to enable the set up of a network of peer support groups across the country.
As a social enterprise, we aim to improve the lives of young people affected by mental health issues. This model is offered at low cost to increase access to early intervention support, and allow as many young people as possible to benefit.
